It is important for people with disability, families and carers to understand how the NDIS will work so that they are ready for when the scheme starts Queensland in July 2016.
Two significant features of how the NDIS will operate are participant planning and choice and control.
Under the NDIS, eligible people with disability (called participants) will be able to access the schemes individualised planning processes to identify the reasonable and necessary supports that are needed to enable the participant to achieve their goals and aspirations.
To help prepare for this planning process, participants will need to consider how they want to live their life now and into the future, and, for example, how they would like to increase their independence, strengthen their connections in the community, and have more choice and control over decisions in their life.
People eligible for the NDIS will also have choice and control over their disability support and will choose who provides this support and decide how and when it is provided.
